When to use  Korean grammar 았어요  / 었어요 / 했어요?

았어요

After removing 다  from the base word, if there is a vowelㅏ or ㅗ  at the adjective/verb ending 았어요 is used. Let’s take an example of the Korean verb 가요. The base word of this verb is 가다. If 다 is removed from the base word only 가 remains which means ㅏ is the ending vowel so according to the rule (If there is a vowelㅏ or ㅗ  at the verb ending 았어요 is used), 가다 becomes 갔어요.

었어요

After removing 다  from the base word, if there is a vowel exceptㅏ or ㅗ  at the adjective/verb ending 었어요 is used. Let’s take an example of the Korean verb 먹어요. The base word of this verb is 먹다. If 다 is removed from the base word only 먹 remains, which means ㅏor ㅗ is not the ending vowel so according to the rule (If there is a vowel exceptㅏ or ㅗ  at the verb ending 었어요 is used) 먹다 becomes 먹었어요.

했어요

The formula to remember 했어요 is easy. Just remember 하다 changes into 했어요.The formula is

하다  + 였  = 하였어요.(하 + 였 = 했어요) so it becomes 했어요. For example, 운동하다 changes into 운동했어요.
