How to use (으)려고 in Korean?
In Korean language, this grammar is used in a pattern of V-(으)려고 which means in order to verb. If the verb stem has final consonant (받침) 으려고 하다 is used and if the verb stem has no final consonant (받침) 려고 하다 is used. (으)려고 is used with any kind of verbs.
- 치게차 운전 잘하려고 매일 연습해요. To be good at driving a forklift I practice every day. 잘하려고 is an intention and 연습해요 is an action verb.
- 일찍 도착하려고 일찍 갔어요. In order to reach/arrive early, I went early. 도착하려고 is an intention and 일찍 갔어요 is an action verb.
- 스페인어를 잘하려고 매일 공부해요. To be good at Spanish, I study every day. 잘하려고 is an intention and 공부해요 is an action verb.
- 건강 검진 하려고 병원에 갈거예요. I will go to the hospital in order to/ for a medical checkup. 검진 하려고 is an intention and 갈거예요 is an action verb.
When using imperative moods like invitation, command, suggestion, request (please eat, don’t do, let’s go) (으)려고 can not be used. In such cases only (으)러 is used. For example-
우리 집에 놀러 오세요. Please come to my house to hangout. This phrase has used invitation so (으)러 is used. 우리 집에 놀려고 오세요. It is a wrong expression.
How to use (으)러 in Korean?
(으)러 also used to express intention in Korean. It is a grammar connective. It is generally used with verbs and it means in order to or for doing something. (으)러 is used with 가다/오다/다니다/돌아다니다/ 돌아오다/ 다녀오다/ 다녀가다 verbs. In simple words (으)러 is used with moving verbs. For example-
- 영어 배우러 미국에 왔어요. I came to America to learn English.
- 우리 집에 놀러와. Come to visit my house.
- 점심을 먹으러 식당에 가요. I go to the cafeteria to have lunch.
- 요리하러 부엌에 갈게요. I will go to the kitchen to cook food.
- 돈을 받으러 은헹으로 가세요. Please go to the bank to receive the money.
All these phrases have 가다 and 오다 verbs. So (으)러 is used with them. But you can not use (으)러 with other verbs. For example-
한국어를 잘하려고 매일 공부해요. In order to be good at Korean, I study Korean daily. This is correct phrase because 려고 connector is used with verbs
한국어를 잘하러 매일 공부해요. In order to be good at Korean, I study Korean daily. This phrase is wrong because (으)러 can not be used with any verbs. (으)러 is used with only movable verbs like 가다/ 오다/ 다니다/ 돌아가다 etc.
How to use 도록 in Korean?
도록 is also used to express intention/ Aim. It is used to say in order to / so that. 도록 and 게 are interchangeable.도록 focuses on action to achieve the goal. 도록 is also used to show extent or degree.
- 저희가 지나가도록 비겨 주세요. In order to pass/ go through, please go to side/be at side
- 뒤에서도 보이도록 크게 쓸게요. In order to see from behind/last, I will write down bigger.
- 실수하지 않도록 한번 더 확인했어요. In order to not to do a mistake, please check it.
How to use 게 in Korean?
게 also used to say/ express the intention. 게 focuses on the goal to do action. 도록 and 개 can be used together in a single sentence– 제가 이해 하도록 쉽게 말해주세요. Please speak slowly in order to understand.
- 하다 – 하도록 – 하게 = In order to do.
- 보다 – 보도록 – 보게 = In order to see/ to see
- 이해하다 – 이해하도록 – 이해하게 = In order to understand.
- 늦다 – 늦지 않도록 – 늦지 않게 = In order to not to be late
