How to introduce yourself in Korean

In this lesson we’re going to look at the expressions that will teach you how to introduce yourself in Korean. We will learn how to say my name and ask for someone’s name when you meet someone for the first time. First, let’s learn self-introduction in Korean.

How to introduce myself in Korean?

안녕하십니까, 저는 _(Your Name)__ 입니다.

안녕하십니까, 제 이름은 –(Your Name)— 입니다.

안녕하십니까, 제 이름은 –(Your Name)— 이에요/ 예요.

저는 (Your age)스물 일곱살 이에요.

저는 (your hometown / country) 한국에서 왔어요.

만나서 반갑습니다/ 만나서 반가워요. 감사합니다

Lets learn from Korean conversation.

Minjo and Naun meet for the first time. Minjo says hello first. “안녕하세요.” Hello. You can use 안녕하세요 when you greet someone. You can use it when you meet someone for the first time or you can use it when you greet someone older than you.

Minjo: “안녕하세요.” Hello.

“제 이름은 김만조예요.” My name is Kim Minjo.

Naun: “안녕하세요.” Hello.

“저는 이 나은이에요.” I am Lee naun.

안녕하세요” is a greeting phrase frequently used in Korean community. After 인사 (greeting) Minjo introduces her name. “제 이름은 김만조예요.” My name is Kim Minjo. It is an expression that introduces the name. ‘김만조’ is ‘이름 (name)’.

You can put your name here (제 이름은 ……..이에요/예요) and then you can introduce your name. This is how Korean says my name is in Korean.

For example, if your name is ‘유민소’, you can say: ‘제 이름은 유민소 예요.’ My name is You Minso. If your name is ‘클라라’, you can say ‘제 이름은 클라라예요.’ My name is Clara.

As you can see, there is no final consonant at the end of the name ‘클라라’. So ‘예요’ is used.

If there is a final consonant in the name, ‘이에요’ is used. If there is no final consonant, ‘예요’ is used.

Let’s look at the pronunciation. ‘름은’ from ‘이름은’ is pronounced as [르믄].

When the final consonant ‘ㅁ’ is followed by a vowel, ‘ㅁ’ goes ‘ㅇ’ position and pronounces it. So, it is pronounced as [르믄]. It is linking (연음).

When you write, you have to write like this. [제 이름은 김만조예요]. But when you speak, you have to pronounce it as [제 이르믄 김만조예요].

Let’s look at the next sentence.

Minjo: “이름이 뭐예요?” What is your name?

After Minjo introduces her name, she wonders her name. So she asks: ‘이름이 뭐예요?’ What is your name?

You can use this expression when you want to know someone’s name. You meet a person for the first time. And it is usually used for people who are similar to your age or younger than you. It is used in an informal situation.

Let’s look at the pronunciation.

‘름이’ from ‘이름이’ is pronounced as [르미].

When the final consonant ‘ㅁ’ is followed by a vowel ‘이’, ‘ㅁ’ goes ‘ㅇ’ position and pronounces it. So it is pronounced as [르미]. It is linking (연음).

In the sentence, it is pronounced as [이르미 뭐예요] but when  you write, you have to write like this.

‘이름이 뭐예요?’

Now, Lee naun greets.

“안녕하세요.” (Hello). And she introduces her name. “저는 이 나은이에요.” I am Lee naun. We just learned how to say I am in Korean which is 저는 ……이에요/ 예요. This is another expression that introduces the name. Here ‘저 (=I)’ is a polite way of saying ‘나 (=I).’

Korean is often speak politely by lowering oneself. ‘저’ is one of them. And ‘이 나은’ is ‘이름 (name)’. You can put your name here and then introduce your name. For example, if the name is ‘이정현,

‘저는 이정현이에요.’ I am Lee jung hyun

Also, if the name is ‘마이클’, ‘저는 마이클이에요.’ I am Michael. You can say that.

And there is a final consonant at the end of the name. So ‘이에요’ is used.

If there is a final consonant at the end of the name, ‘이에요’ is used. If there is no final consonant, ‘예요’ is used.

how to introduce someone in Korean?

when you introduce someone in English you say this is my mother or this is my son how would you say that in Korean? what is the word for my 나의 that’s my in korean and if  you want it to be a more polite instead of saying 나의 you can say 저의. Either way is fine. 저의 is much more polite way of saying it.

So how would you say my mother, my son in Korean?

Koreans don’t use my for this kind of phrase, instead they use we or our. Because they love to say these words in a togetherness form. So instead of saying my mother(나의 엄마) they will say our mother (우리 엄마). Actually our means 우리의 but koreans just leave/skip the word 의 and just say 우리.

My son is 우리아들 in korean.

It can be really strange for foreigners if they listen 우리 아내 which literally means our wife but it’s actually my wife in korean. So the point is that in Korean society or the culture instead of saying you and I (the separateness) they will say our. So even when you introduce someone in your family still instead of saying my you say our including the listener also.
