제 이름은——예요. My name is ——.

만나서 반가워요/ 반갑습니다. Nice to meet you.

The actual word of my is 제 (JE) or 내 and 우리 means our, but you can use 우리 as my when referring to family members. People use 우리 엄마(my mom) more than 제 엄마 in Korea.

By adding 님 at the last part of a person’s title makes a different sense. If you add 님 after someone’s title it becomes more polite .조부모 and 조부모님 has the same meaning that is grandparents. But 조부모님 is a more polite, formal and honorific way. Let’s see the table below to know more about family words in Korean.

Korean family terms

basic korean words

In Korean family words normally there are 2 words to address family members. Korean people use very polite way and casual way to speak about somebody in the family. The polite form of a mother is a 어머니 and casual name of the mother is 엄마.

In Korea, there is no mothers day but instead, there is a parents day which is called 어버이날. Likewise, the polite(Formal) form of the father is 아버지 and informal form is 아빠. Majority of Korean uses 엄마 and 아빠 more than 어머니 and 아버지. using 엄마 and 아빠 doesn’t mean children are rude to their parents but it means children a lot closer to their parents so the formality has been dropped.
